Scripture Reading:
Romans 12:15-21 (ESV) – Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep
with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not
be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own
sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is
honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on
you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves,
but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine,
I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is
hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by
so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be
overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
John 13:34-35 (ESV) – “A new commandment I give to you, that
you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love
one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one another.”
LOVE – Definition by Pastor A. Louis Patterson
“Love is a minimum of emotions and a maximum evaluation of need,
with the meeting of that need, in a spirit of self-sacrifice, by doing
whatever is needed to be done, even if you don’t feel like doing it…”
1. You must show LOVE to others no matter WHAT they go
through in life.
Romans 12:15-16 (ESV) – Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep
with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not
be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own
sight.
A. You are to REJOICE with those who REJOICE.
Rejoice –
Psalm 35:27 (NCV) – May my friends sing and shout for joy. May
they always say, “Praise the greatness of the LORD, who loves to
see his servants do well.“
B. You are to WEEP with those who WEEP.
Weep –
Acts 20:35 (NCV) – I showed you in all things that you should work
as I did and help the weak. I taught you to remember the words
Jesus said: ’It is more blessed to give than to receive.’
Galatians 6:2 (NLT2) – Share each other’s burdens, and in this
way obey the law of Christ.
Hebrews 4:15-16 (NLT2) – This High Priest of ours understands
our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he
did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious
God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help
us when we need it most.
2. You must show LOVE to others no matter WHO they are.
Romans 12:16 (ESV) – Live in harmony with one another. Do not be
haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own
sight.
A. You must live in HARMONY with each other.
Harmony –
1 Peter 3:8 (ESV) – Finally, all of you, have unity of mind,
sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.
B. You must never be HAUGHTY in relation to others.
Haughty –
1 Peter 5:5 (NLT2) – In the same way, you younger men must
accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, serve each other
in humility, for “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”
Romans 12:3 (NLT2) – Because of the privilege and authority God
has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are
better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of
yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.
Galatians 6:3 (NLT2) – If you think you are too important to help
someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.
