Scripture Reading:
1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (ESV)
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have
not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all
mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as
to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be
burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it
is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable
or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the
truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all
things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away;
as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will
pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a
child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I
gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.
Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have
been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the
greatest of these is love.
John 13:34-35 (ESV) – “A new commandment I give to
you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you,
you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will
know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.”
LOVE – Definition by Pastor A. Louis Patterson
“Love is a minimum of emotions and a maximum
evaluation of need, with the meeting of that need, in a
spirit of self-sacrifice, by doing whatever is needed to
be done, even if you don’t feel like doing it…”
1. Your LOVE is REAL when you first show LOVE to
other BELIEVERS.
Romans 12:13 (ESV) – Contribute to the needs of the
saints and seek to show hospitality.
Romans 12:13 (NLT2) – When God’s people are in need,
be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice
hospitality.
A. GIVE to meet the NEEDS of OTHER believers.
Contribute –
Acts 4:34-35 (ESV) – There was not a needy person
among them, for as many as were owners of lands or
houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was
sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to
each as any had need.
Romans 16:1-2 (ESV) – I commend to you our sister
Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, 2 that you
may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints,
and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she
has been a patron of many and of myself as well.
2 Corinthians 8:1-4 (ESV) – We want you to know,
brothers, about the grace of God that has been given
among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test
of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme
poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their
part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can
testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord,
4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the
relief of the saints—
B. SHOW hospitality to others
Hospitality –
1 Timothy 3:2 (ESV) – Therefore an overseer must be
above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded,
self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
1 Peter 4:9 (NLT2) – Cheerfully share your home with
those who need a meal or a place to stay.
